Compare the LB-50S and LB-45S low profile dual axis ball heads by load capacity, weight, and ball size to pick the right one for your tripod or monopod.
Quick answer
Choose the LB-50S if your kit is heavier or you want extra stability from a larger ball and higher load rating; choose the LB-45S if you prioritize saving every gram and your gear stays well under 10kg.
Why the load capacity gap matters more than the weight gap
The LB-50S is rated to 15kg and the LB-45S to 10kg, a 5kg difference that matters when you add a long lens, gimbal, or heavy fluid base. The 35mm ball on the LB-50S also gives more surface area for smoother friction control under load, while the 30mm ball on the LB-45S is easier to move precisely with light kits.
The weight difference is only 35g (280g vs 245g), so the real decision is capacity and ball size, not saving weight.
Base size and tripod compatibility
The LB-50S has a 50mm base and is intended for a larger travel tripod or monopod; the LB-45S has a 45mm base for a travel tripod or smaller monopod. Check your tripod's head platform diameter: a 50mm base on a compact tripod can overhang or feel top-heavy, while a 45mm base on a larger tripod may look undersized but still works if the load is within 10kg.
Both are Arca compatible, so existing plates and clamps should fit without adapters.
When the LB-45S is the smarter buy
If you shoot mirrorless with compact primes or a light telephoto, the LB-45S saves 35g and still handles 10kg, which covers most travel kits. Its lower price also leaves budget for a spare plate or a better tripod bag.
Avoid the LB-45S if you regularly use a 200-600mm lens, a gimbal, or a heavy video rig, because the 10kg limit and smaller ball leave less margin for error.
Decision rules for buying
- Weigh your heaviest camera and lens combination: If the total is under 7kg, the LB-45S gives you a 3kg safety margin; if it is 7–12kg, choose the LB-50S for its 15kg rating. Add the weight of plates, gimbal, and cables before deciding.
- Match the base to your tripod platform: Use the LB-45S on travel tripods with a 45mm or smaller platform; use the LB-50S on larger travel tripods or monopods with a 50mm platform. A base wider than the platform can overhang and feel unstable.
- Consider your longest lens: For lenses over 300mm or any setup needing precise friction control under load, the LB-50S's 35mm ball is easier to lock down smoothly. Smaller balls are fine for wide-to-normal focal lengths but less forgiving with long glass.
