Compare a universal digiscoping adapter with a dedicated monocular digiscoping kit to attach your smartphone to a spotting scope. Learn the trade-offs and which setup fits your needs.
Quick answer
For most birders and nature observers, a universal digiscoping adapter like the VEO PA-65 offers the flexibility to use your existing spotting scope with a smartphone, while a dedicated kit like the VESTA 8320M provides an all-in-one solution with a built-in monocular and remote for convenience.
Why the choice matters for spotting scope users
Digiscoping lets you capture photos or videos through your spotting scope without buying an expensive telephoto lens. The main decision is whether to buy a universal adapter that works with your current scope or a purpose-built monocular kit that includes the scope, phone holder, and remote in one package.
The VEO PA-65 is a universal adapter that fits many spotting scopes and cameras, while the VESTA 8320M is a complete monocular digiscoping kit with a smartphone adaptor and Bluetooth remote. Each approach has clear trade-offs in cost, portability, and ease of setup.
What you gain and lose with each option
A universal adapter like the VEO PA-65 lets you keep using your current spotting scope, but you need to ensure compatibility with your scope's eyepiece and your phone's camera. It does not include a remote, so you may need to tap the screen carefully to avoid shake.
A dedicated kit like the VESTA 8320M includes a compact monocular, a smartphone adaptor, and a Bluetooth remote. This means you get a ready-to-use digiscoping setup in one box, but you are limited to the monocular's magnification and objective lens size (32mm). It is also slightly heavier to carry as a separate unit.
Trade-offs at a glance
- Compatibility: The VEO PA-65 is a universal adapter that fits many spotting scopes and cameras. The VESTA 8320M is a complete kit with a dedicated monocular, so compatibility is guaranteed but limited to that monocular.
- Portability: The VESTA 8320M is a compact monocular that you can carry separately, while the VEO PA-65 requires you to carry it with your existing spotting scope, which may be larger.
- Ease of use: The VESTA 8320M includes a Bluetooth remote for shake-free capture, making it easier to get sharp images. The VEO PA-65 requires you to use your phone's timer or tap carefully. If you value sharp images without extra gear, the kit's remote is a clear advantage.
